How Hypnotherapy & CBT Cure Phobias

Phobias are intense, irrational fears – often triggered by a single bad experience, something we witnessed or even something we read or saw on screen. But here’s the key insight that underpins phobia treatment: research has shown that fear and deep relaxation cannot exist in the body at the same time. This is the principle behind systematic desensitisation, one of the most effective evidence-based approaches to phobia cure. Using a combination of clinical hypnotherapy, CBT and gradual exposure therapy, I help you mentally and physically relax into the feared situation – progressively, gently – until the fear loses its grip entirely. The goal isn’t just to manage your phobia, but to genuinely overcome it so you can live a richer, freer life.

Frequently Asked Questions About Phobia Treatment

How do you cure a phobia with Hypnotherapy?

I actually work with a combination of Hypnotherapy and CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy. Fears and phobias are usually the result of a bad experience or a negative learning around the particular stimulus remembered unconsciously. That experience can be generalised to cause an overreaction or an irrational need for safety. This usually results in avoidance, not the best strategy for overcoming a fear. I usually do a hierarchy of fear test to determine how much the fear is causing in different situations, such as proximity to the object feared. Then we work slowly up that hierarchy in vitro (using the imagination or in hypnosis) whilst promoting calm and relaxation throughout the process. We may look at various other gentle behavioural methods to slowly get you to relax and face the particular situation in steps. There are four or so processes I use to overcome a fear or phobia.

How many sessions does it take to cure a phobia?

Most phobias respond well to a short course of Hypno-CBT — typically 3–5 sessions. Some simpler phobias, like a specific fear of spiders or needles, can sometimes be resolved in as few as 2–3 sessions. More complex phobias, or those linked to deeper anxiety patterns, may take a little longer. In our first session we’ll assess your phobia, set clear goals, and I’ll give you an honest expectation of what to expect.

Can hypnotherapy help with fear of flying?

Absolutely — fear of flying is one of the most common phobias I treat, and one of the most rewarding to overcome. Using a combination of hypnotherapy and CBT, we work on understanding the thought patterns driving your fear, teaching relaxation and breathing techniques you can use on the plane, and using hypnotic visualisation to rehearse calm, comfortable flights. I’ve helped many clients go from complete avoidance to enjoying holidays abroad. As one client put it, she was able to get on four flights and remain calm and relaxed throughout.

What phobias are most common successes for you?

I have worked very successfully with open space fears, fear of heights and bridges. I have also worked successfully with people who have a fear of bees, wasps and other flying insects. Fear of Flying is a very common issue and I’m proud to say I have helped many clients get on planes and enjoy their holidays. Fear of crowds and enclosed spaces are also common issues.

What’s the difference between a fear and a phobia?

A fear is a normal, proportionate response to something genuinely threatening — like feeling nervous near the edge of a cliff. A phobia is an intense, disproportionate fear that’s out of proportion to the actual danger, and that significantly interferes with your daily life. If your fear causes you to avoid situations, limits your choices, or triggers physical symptoms like panic, racing heart or nausea, it’s likely a phobia — and it’s very treatable with Hypno-CBT.

Can phobia treatment be done online?

Yes — I offer phobia hypnotherapy and CBT sessions via Zoom, Teams and FaceTime, and the results are just as effective as in-person work. Many of my phobia clients actually prefer online sessions as they feel more relaxed in their own environment, which can help the therapy work even more effectively. I’m based in Caterham, Surrey, and see clients from across Croydon, South London and further afield.

I’ve had my phobia for decades. Is it too late to treat?

Not at all. Many of my phobia clients have lived with their fear for 20, 30, even 40+ years before seeking help. The length of time you’ve had a phobia doesn’t determine how treatable it is — what matters is your willingness to engage with the process. Hypno-CBT works by creating new neural pathways, and your brain retains its ability to rewire at any age. Some of my most dramatic successes have been with clients who assumed their phobia was “just part of who they are.”
