My approach to hypnotherapy

I practise hypnotherapy combined with CBT.

I also work as a Life Coach and mentor, using mindfulness, ACT and third wave methods. It is highly integrative therapy. Life changing as these can be, research shows that 50% of therapy outcomes are due to the success of the therapeutic relationship – listening and building trust and empathy.

It’s something I hope you will see reflected in my reviews here and on Bark.

"David is truly amazing! Fantastic hypnotherapy exercises which helped calm my body and physical anxiety symptoms... hugely beneficial for me ... "

Hannah – Coulsdon, Surrey client

" ... Excellent material ... the improvements in my career, relationships have been life-changing ... "

Frequently asked questions

Why should I choose DOCwellness?

Not all hypnotherapy is the same. I practise Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, which uses evidence-based techniques supported by scientific research. I am also a qualified Life Coach and NLP practitioner. I use mindfulness and meditation techniques alongside Hypno-CBT and have a keen interest and in-depth knowledge of philosophy and spiritual teachings. You get a multi-component or an integrative therapy approach, where we can cover things from a multitude of angles. We examine which of your thoughts, behaviours and beliefs might be holding you back and look to see how we can replace them with more helpful, positive ways of being. In my experience, the more you can come to understand your problem, the better your chances of overcoming it.

Does Hypnotherapy work?

A key question of course – and yes it does. Barrios, Ph.D presented a review in American Health magazine in 2007 that measure it as having a 93% success rate after an average of 6 sessions, which would make it the most effective and fastest therapy there is. Of course other studies vary for different issues and say that the effectiveness varies from person to person. It seems science is still catching up with what Hypnotherapy is and what it can do and evidence is building as more trials are undertaken and accepted by the scientific community. There are certainly many variables, but when combined with an approach such as CBT, the evidence is pretty overwhelming.

What does a typical session look like?

It depends which session we’re in and what we’re tackling (Stopping Smoking is a separate programme).  But in general the first is different to further sessions. In that first session we combine talking with assessment – getting to know you and your issue and goals more thoroughly. Then agreeing those goals and me forming an effective treatment plan. I will then let you know how many sessions to expect. My work is always outcome and process driven so we don’t talk forever about the past and how you may have arrived at the challenge you’re facing. I always record the actual process, script or meditation element for you to keep for life. Subsequent sessions involve assessing your progress, doing more processes, setting homework for between sessions and sometimes resetting goals.

Do you offer Hypnotherapy on Zoom?

Yes. It has been proven to work very effectively on Zoom, Teams and Facetime. Remote therapy or online therapy is very helpful for clients who are very busy or live further afield. I have helped many clients in all parts of the UK and the US.

I'm not sure I'm hypnotisable

It’s almost certain you are. Have you got any imagination? Do you get carried away in a film or novel? With imagination and a willingness to learn you will be surprised at how quickly you can hypnotise yourself. You probably already do.

Can you hypnotise me to be good at anything I want?

I’ll have a go! But, to be serious, it’s unlikely you’ll experience any change in yourself straight away. Hypnosis works differently for different people. And there are even different forms of hypnotic approach. Hypnosis with NLP is different to hypnosis with CBT, for instance. The idea of being swiftly ‘hypnotised’ comes from the stage hypnosis we’ve all seen and enjoyed as entertainment. This is misleading and builds unrealistic expectations.

Snapping someone into doing something or acting in an unusual way is arbitrary and highly random, even though some subjects are more suggestible than others. If you’d like to be more sociable, or better at tennis – or highly attractive to members of the opposite sex (or the same come to that), then these things usually take work and practice. Of course hypnosis, in the more trained form of hypnotherapy, can help greatly. But to change, to be better at something or to rid yourself of the blocks to success in anything will require some added work which is why you will likely need more than one session and more than hypnosis to help you succeed. I can certainly help with this.

How many sessions will I need?

Hypno-CBT is targeted, short course therapy – outcome and process driven. You will experience some change pretty quickly but, depending on issue and other factors, expect 3-6 sessions.

What are your rates?

£90 a session. This rate is reduced depending on block bookings of 3 and over – and certain circumstances. Please enquire directly for full rates.

What is Hypnotic Suggestion?

It is a means of experiencing certain helpful ideas at a level profound enough to influence our emotions and behaviour.

What exactly is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy is recognised by the British Medical Association and the NHS as an effective treatment in a wide number of conditions. My diploma, from the UK College of Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy, is currently the only Hypnotherapy qualification recognised for CPD by the British Pschological Society. I also have a separate diploma in Hypnotherapy, NLP and Life Coaching.

What is CBT and how does it work?

CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is a type of talking therapy which involves the interactions between our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. I always get my clients to imagine a triangle and to place the thoughts on the top apex corner, the feelings or emotions on the bottom right corner and behaviours on the bottom left. The thoughts we have can affect our emotions and behaviours and our emotions can also affect our behaviours. So by working on any of these we can start to change the other. Sometimes we can stuck in a loop of negative thinking which can influence our emotions and behaviours. For example, if you keep repeating thoughts like, ‘I am no good at talking to people/ people aren’t interested in me / I have nothing interesting to say’ then this might cause you to feel a lack of confidence, or a fear of socialising…which may lead to a behaviour of not going out. CBT will seek to identify these elements and suggest interventions to help overcome the issue.
