Can hypnotherapy really improve sports performance?

Yes — there’s growing evidence that hypnosis helps athletes improve self-confidence, focus, and competitive performance. Hypnotherapy can work amazingly well for the mental side of sport — managing performance anxiety, building concentration, and enhancing the quality of mental rehearsal. Combined with CBT, we address both the conscious thinking patterns and the deeper automatic responses that affect how you perform.

How does hypnotherapy help with exam nerves?

Exam anxiety is driven by catastrophic thinking (“I’m going to fail”, “my mind will go blank”) and the physical symptoms that follow — racing heart, shallow breathing, inability to concentrate. Hypno-CBT tackles both. CBT helps you identify and challenge the unhelpful thought patterns, while hypnotherapy uses deep relaxation and visualisation to rehearse calm, confident performance in the exam setting. Flow — sometimes called being “in the zone” — is a state of total absorption where performance feels effortless and time seems to disappear. It’s the state elite athletes and performers describe when they’re at their absolute best. Flow requires the right balance of challenge, skill, focus and relaxation. Hypnotherapy is uniquely suited to helping you access flow because it works directly with the focused, absorbed state of mind that flow requires. I’m not a professional athlete. Can this still help me?

Absolutely. Most of my peak performance clients aren’t professionals — they’re club tennis players, amateur golfers, weekend runners, actors in local theatre, students facing important exams, or professionals preparing for big presentations. The principles of peak performance are the same regardless of level: managing stress and anxiety, building confidence, sharpening focus, and learning to trust your abilities under pressure. How many sessions will I need?

Typically 3–5 sessions, depending on what you’re working on. If there’s a specific event — an exam, presentation, or competition — we can sometimes achieve significant results in as few as 2–3 targeted sessions. For ongoing performance improvement in sport or work, a short course of 4–5 sessions gives us time to build a complete mental toolkit including self-hypnosis, visualisation, and CBT techniques that you can use independently for life.

Can peak performance sessions be done online?

Yes — I offer hypnotherapy and CBT sessions via Zoom, Teams and FaceTime. Online sessions work very effectively for performance work, and many clients prefer the convenience of working from home. I’m based in Caterham, Surrey, and see clients from across Croydon, South London and further afield.
