Rather than simply being a physical sensation, there are many aspects to pain:
- sensory: where the pain is located, what type of pain it is and how much it varies
- Cognitive: how we interpret it, its cause, progress, expectation and attention we give it
- Physiological: the neurophysiological processes and how the brain receives the information about its
- Behavioural: increased muscular tension, guarding responses
- Affective: how we respond to pain on an emotional level
We can’t change some of these aspects but there are many we can.
