Hypnotherapy for Pain Management in Croydon & Caterham
Ease Chronic Pain With Hypnotherapy & CBT
Understanding Chronic Pain and How Your Mind Affects It
How Hypnotherapy & CBT Help Manage Pain
Whether you’re living with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, cancer-related pain, sports injuries or chronic back problems, there is real hope. Research consistently shows that hypnotherapy provides meaningful pain relief — a comprehensive review published in the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association found that hypnotherapy reduces pain and improves quality of life to a greater extent than other psychological interventions or standard treatments. Using cognitive behavioural therapy, we work on the thoughts and beliefs that amplify your pain experience. Then through clinical hypnotherapy, we access the subconscious mind — where pain perception is processed — to help you distance yourself from the sensation and develop powerful new coping responses. The goal isn’t to pretend pain doesn’t exist, but to fundamentally change your relationship with it.
Hypnotherapy for Pain Relief in Croydon, Caterham, South London and Surrey
The good news is that pain perception lives in the brain — and that’s exactly what we can change. How you interpret, attend to, and emotionally respond to pain makes an enormous difference to how much you suffer. Through Hypno-CBT, we can transform that response. I’ve experienced chronic pain myself, and I understand what you’re going through — you can read my own story of pain here. Don’t despair — contact me today for a free, no-obligation chat and let’s get your life back on track. I work from my clinic in Caterham for clients across Croydon, South London and Surrey, and also offer sessions online via Zoom.
The Many Dimensions of Pain – and where Therapy Can Help
- Sensory — where the pain is located, the type of pain and how much it varies in intensity
- Cognitive — how you interpret the pain, its cause, its likely progress, and the attention you give it (this is where CBT is most powerful), using mindfulness and distancing.
- Physiological — the neurological processes and how the brain receives and amplifies pain signals
- Behavioural — increased muscular tension, guarding responses and avoidance of activity (hypnotherapy helps retrain these responses)
- Affective — how you respond to pain emotionally: fear, stress, frustration, anger, hopelessness (Hypno-CBT directly addresses this)
Frequently Asked Questions About Pain Management Hypnotherapy
Can hypnotherapy really reduce pain?
Yes — and the evidence is strong. A review published in the Journal of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association found that hypnotherapy decreases pain and improves quality of life to a greater extent than other psychological interventions or standard care. A separate meta-analysis of 85 controlled trials found that hypnosis with direct analgesic suggestion achieved a 42% clinically meaningful reduction in pain for highly responsive individuals and 29% for moderately responsive individuals. Pain is processed in the brain, and hypnotherapy works by changing how the brain interprets and responds to pain signals.
What types of chronic pain can you help with?
I work with a wide range of chronic pain conditions including back pain, arthritis (both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis), fibromyalgia, cancer-related pain, neuropathic pain, sports injuries, tension headaches and migraines, IBS-related pain, and Parkinson’s-related pain. If your pain is persistent and your GP has ruled out any underlying condition that needs medical treatment, Hypno-CBT can help you manage and reduce it.
How does CBT help with pain?
CBT — cognitive behavioural therapy — helps by addressing the thoughts and beliefs that amplify your pain experience. When you’re in chronic pain, it’s common to develop patterns of catastrophic thinking (“this will never get better”, “I can’t cope”), hypervigilance (constantly monitoring your body for pain signals), and avoidance (giving up activities you enjoy). These patterns actually increase pain perception. CBT gives you practical tools to challenge these thoughts and gradually re-engage with life, which in turn reduces the intensity of pain you experience.
How many sessions will I need for pain management?
Typically 4–8 sessions, depending on your condition and how long you’ve been living with pain. A meta-analysis of hypnosis for chronic musculoskeletal and neuropathic pain found that eight or more sessions produced moderate to large effects on pain intensity. In our first session, we’ll assess your situation in detail, understand your pain patterns, and set clear, realistic goals. I also provide audio recordings of our hypnotherapy processes that you can use at home between sessions and keep for life.
Is this a replacement for medical treatment?
No — Hypno-CBT works alongside your existing medical care, not instead of it. I always recommend that clients continue with any treatment prescribed by their GP or specialist. What Hypno-CBT does is address the psychological dimensions of pain that medication alone often can’t reach — the thoughts, emotions and behaviours that influence how much pain you experience and how much it affects your daily life. Many clients find that effective pain management therapy reduces their reliance on pain medication over time.
Can pain management therapy be done online?
Yes — I offer hypnotherapy and CBT for pain management via Zoom, Teams and FaceTime. Online therapy works very effectively for pain management, and many clients find it more comfortable to work from home — especially when mobility is an issue. I’m based in Caterham, Surrey, and see clients from across Croydon, South London and further afield.
