FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About Hypnotherapy & CBT

Hypnotherapy & CBT FAQ

Why Choose DOCwellness

Not all hypnotherapy is the same. I practise Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, which uses evidence-based techniques supported by scientific research. I am also a qualified Life Coach and NLP practitioner. I use mindfulness and meditation techniques alongside Hypno-CBT and have a keen interest and in-depth knowledge of philosophy and spiritual teachings. You get a multi-component or an integrative therapy approach, where we can cover things from a multitude of angles. We examine which of your thoughts, behaviours and beliefs might be holding you back and look to see how we can replace them with more helpful, positive ways of being. In my experience, the more you can come to understand your problem, the better your chances of overcoming it.

What is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a very safe and special way of using various naturally-occurring psychological and physiological states. Think of hypnosis as something we do every day when we watch TV or engage and focus on something to the exclusion of everything else. Everyone, in principle, can be hypnotised. Just relax, think positively and imagine the things being suggested. Hypnotherapy is a collaborative process in which you allow yourself to follow the guidance of the therapist by using your imagination to evoke positive emotions and rehearse behaviour change. This therapeutic alliance between client and therapist is crucial.

Hypnosis is not a state of mind control, you cannot do anything against your will and nobody has ever got ‘stuck’ in hypnosis.

Comedy stage hypnosis has little to do with clinical hypnotherapy.

Around 90% of people report being aware of everything that happens.

Tell me more about the Life Coaching and Mentoring you offer

To add to my Hypnotherapy and CBT approaches I also offer Life Coaching and Mentoring. I am a fully qualified Life Coach, gaining my diploma in 2003. And as such, I offer a fully integrated service which is multi-component based. This allows me to adapt to the needs of my clients as I see them arise during the session. Sometimes a client may come to me with a particular issue, and as we progress, others may surface which may be better tackled using a different discipline. I will always discuss this in the session. My life experience, qualifications and research into areas such as spirituality and philosophy also enables me to offer mentoring if requested.

Does Hypnotherapy work?

A key question of course – and yes it does. And if it didn’t why on earth would I be doing it!?

Barrios, Ph.D presented a review in American Health magazine in 2007 that measure it as having a 93% success rate after an average of 6 sessions, which would make it the most effective and fastest therapy there is – particularly for anxiety issues. Of course other studies vary for different issues and say that the effectiveness varies from person to person. It seems science is still catching up with what Hypnotherapy is and what it can do and evidence is building as more trials are undertaken and accepted by the scientific community. There are certainly many variables, but when combined with an approach such as CBT, the evidence is pretty overwhelming.

What does a typical session look like?

It depends which session we’re in and what we’re tackling (Stopping Smoking is a separate programme).  But in general the first is different to further sessions. In that first session we combine talking with assessment – getting to know you and your issue and goals more thoroughly. Then agreeing those goals and me forming an effective treatment plan. I will then let you know how many sessions to expect. My work is always outcome and process driven so we don’t talk forever about the past and how you may have arrived at the challenge you’re facing. I always record the actual process, script or meditation element for you to keep for life. Subsequent sessions involve assessing your progress, doing more processes, setting homework for between sessions and sometimes resetting goals.

Is Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy safe?

Yes. It is completely safe. Nobody has ever got ‘stuck’ in it.

Will I get to experience a hypnotic trance?

It is something of a debate in the field of hypnotherapy and science as to whether there is such a thing as hypnotic trance. Whilst this may sound surprising, there is no single brain state shown by scans that corresponds to ‘hypnosis’.  The idea of hypnotic sleep is something of a red herring too, because while hypnosis is often paired with deep relaxation, in one study people were hypnotised while riding exercise bikes. This has led many academics to conclude that there is no such thing as hypnotic trance and that all hypnosis can be explained by ordinary psychological, biological and social factors. There is no doubt that this helps demystify the whole process and removes the hypnotist from his pedestal. However, there is no doubt that remarkable things can happen to people with hypnosis, including teeth removal and open heart surgery – without any anaesthetic!

Trance or no trance (it’s only a word anyway!), think of it as you will. It’s better in some ways to think of it as focused, relaxed attention. Something we do all the time when attending to something at the exclusion of everything else.

I'm not sure I'm hypnotisable

It’s almost certain you are. Have you got any imagination? Do you get carried away in a film or novel? With imagination and a willingness to learn you will be surprised at how quickly you can hypnotise yourself. You probably already do.

What is Hypnotic Suggestion?

It is a means of experiencing certain helpful ideas at a level profound enough to influence our emotions and behaviour.

Can you hypnotise me to be good at anything I want?

I’ll have a go! But, to be serious, it’s unlikely you’ll experience any change in yourself straight away. Hypnosis works differently for different people. And there are even different forms of hypnotic approach. Hypnosis with NLP is different to hypnosis with CBT, for instance. The idea of being swiftly ‘hypnotised’ comes from the stage hypnosis we’ve all seen and enjoyed as entertainment. This is misleading and builds unrealistic expectations.

Snapping someone into doing something or acting in an unusual way is arbitrary and highly random, even though some subjects are more suggestible than others. If you’d like to be more sociable, or better at tennis – or highly attractive to members of the opposite sex (or the same come to that), then these things usually take work and practice. Of course hypnosis, in the more trained form of hypnotherapy, can help greatly. But to change, to be better at something or to rid yourself of the blocks to success in anything will require some added work which is why you will likely need more than one session and more than hypnosis to help you succeed. I can certainly help with this.

How many sessions will I need?

Hypno-CBT is targeted, short-course therapy — typically 3–6 sessions depending on the issue. Some simpler issues like specific phobias can sometimes be resolved in 2–3 sessions, while more complex issues like deep-rooted anxiety or chronic pain may take a little longer. I’ll give you an honest estimate after our first session. My stop smoking programme is a structured two-session course.

Do you offer online hypnotherapy?

Yes — I offer full sessions via Zoom, Teams and FaceTime, and the results are just as effective as face-to-face work. Online hypnotherapy has been proven to work very effectively, and many clients prefer the convenience of working from home. I’ve helped clients across the UK and internationally via online sessions. See my Areas I Serve page for more information.

Can I bring someone with me to a session?

For the initial consultation, you’re welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member if that would make you feel more comfortable. For the actual therapy sessions, it’s generally better to work one-to-one so you can fully relax and engage with the process without feeling self-conscious. We’ll discuss this together and do whatever works best for you.

What is Self Hypnosis and can I do it myself?

All hypnosis can be better thought of as self hypnosis, with someone like myself as the co-pilot of your mind and imagination. Self Hypnosis is something I will teach you to do as part of our work. We will establish and agree your individual unique goals and positive suggestions together. Then I will teach you how to relax and calm your mind and your body to enter your own state of hypnosis. Your mind will move from beta state to alpha, where our breathing slows as we relax more, then you are in a state to repeat your affirmations, visualise goals and start to change your negative beliefs. After practising with me, and with the audio recording I will give you, you will learn to do it all by yourself.

Many people experience a state of floating, a wonderful sense of calmness and therapeutic release which can be euphoric and prompt positive change in itself.

What exactly is Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy?

Essentially it’s Hypno-CBT, or a combination of Hypnotherapy and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). Even more confusingly it can be termed CBH. It’s highly evidence based and works especially powerfully for anxiety, sleep and habits. CBT itself is considered the gold standard of therapies. From a CBT angle I look at your thoughts, emotions and behaviours and how they interact with each other. We do this in the first session, make an assessment and work towards your individual goals. Once we have established those goals, I form a path of treatment using a combination of psycho-education, CBT techniques and bespoke hypnotherapy scripts, tools and processes. We may include advanced breathing techniques, mindfulness, ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy or MBCT.

Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy is recognised by the British Medical Association and the NHS as an effective treatment in a wide number of conditions. My diploma, from the UK College of Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy, is currently the only Hypnotherapy qualification recognised for CPD by the British Pschological Society. I also have a separate diploma in Hypnotherapy, NLP and Life Coaching.

What is CBT and how does it work?

CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, is a type of talking therapy which involves the interactions between our thoughts, feelings and behaviours. I always get my clients to imagine a triangle and to place the thoughts on the top apex corner, the feelings or emotions on the bottom right corner and behaviours on the bottom left. The thoughts we have can affect our emotions and behaviours and our emotions can also affect our behaviours. So by working on any of these we can start to change the other. Sometimes we can stuck in a loop of negative thinking which can influence our emotions and behaviours. For example, if you keep repeating thoughts like, ‘I am no good at talking to people/ people aren’t interested in me / I have nothing interesting to say’ then this might cause you to feel a lack of confidence, or a fear of socialising…which may lead to a behaviour of not going out. CBT will seek to identify these elements and suggest interventions to help overcome the issue.

What are the issues you cover?

If you haven’t found the issue you’re suffering with in the primary menus, here is a list of approaches and issues that I also cover :

Beyond my core specialisms, I also work with anger management, negative thinking patterns, public speaking anxiety, sports performance, procrastination, motivation issues, drinking habits, insecurity and low self-worth, perimenopause-related insomnia and general positive personal change.

If you’re struggling with something that isn’t listed here, please get in touch – there’s a good chance I can help.

What kind of issues do you NOT cover?

I do not deal with conditions that are considered to be psychoses, which can include personality disorders and certain bi-polar conditions. I measure for depression using PHQ9 and GAD7 forms and if I consider that depression to be clinically too high, then I will refer the patient on to someone more suitable.

Do you work with Mindfulness and Meditation techniques?

Yes. Mindfulness is one part of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, a way of becoming aware of your thoughts as they arise and allowing them to be. You are then able to observe and distance yourself from them so that you are less involved in their stories. This takes practice. It is very helpful for anxiety issues.

Do you work with ACT - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy?

Yes, I do. ACT is a Third Wave Therapy, along similar lines as Cognitive Therapy and MBCT which are helpful for depression, mood swings and use mindfulness techniques around acceptance. Instead of battling with your symptoms, patients learn to accept their symptoms, which paradoxically tends to reduce them. Again, you need first hand help from an expert with this.

I’m looking for some hypnosis therapy near me. Whereabouts are you and what areas do you cover?

I’m based at 20 Westway, Caterham CR3 5TP in Surrey. I see clients from across Croydon, South London and the wider Surrey area – including Coulsdon, Purley, Kenley, Sanderstead, Sutton, Banstead, Chipstead, Redhill, Reigate, Godstone and Oxted. I also offer online sessions via Zoom, Teams and FaceTime for client anywhere in the UK and beyond. See my full Areas I Serve page for more details and a map.

How much does hypnotherapy cost?

My standard rate is £105 per session. I offer reduced rates for block bookings of three or more sessions (c£95/session), and certain circumstances may also qualify for a reduced rate. My stop smoking programme is priced separately as it includes two sessions, audio recordings, a free booster session and a satisfaction guarantee. Please contact me directly for full pricing details.

Is hypnotherapy available on the NHS?

Hypnotherapy is not widely available on the NHS, although some GP practices may refer patients for specific conditions like IBS. Most of my clients see me privately. At £95-£105 per session with a typical course of 3–6 sessions, many clients find hypnotherapy very cost-effective compared to longer-term talking therapies. I offer a free 20-minute consultation so you can discuss your situation before committing.

What’s the difference between hypnotherapy and counselling?

Counselling typically involves talking through your feelings and experiences over an extended period, often looking at the past to understand the present. Hypno-CBT takes a different approach — it’s more proactive, shorter-term, and focused on changing your thoughts, feelings and behaviours going forward. We use a combination of cognitive behavioural therapy, clinical hypnotherapy, and practical tools like breathing techniques and self-hypnosis. Most clients see meaningful change within a few sessions rather than months or years.

Have you written a book?

Yes — Unlocking My Greatest Self is my book of 50 secrets to becoming calm, confident and fulfilled. It draws on evidence-based hypnotherapy and CBT techniques, mindfulness practices, Stoic wisdom, and insights from my years of working with clients. Many of my clients find it a helpful companion to our therapy sessions, and it’s available on Amazon.
